ASHEVILLE, North Carolina, July 29-31, 2016 – The 9th Annual Gathering of The SeatWeavers’ Guild brings the craft of chair caning to the Folk Art Center July 29-31. Asheville’s Silver River Center for Chair Caning is hosting the conference and will be having an Open House at the chair museum in CURVE Studios & Garden on Friday July 29 from 10am-6pm.
More than 100 chair caners from across the nation will participate in the conference at the Folk Art Center's Auditorium. Saturday’s workshops belt weaving, corn shuck weaving, staining cane, fine-tuning laced caning, posting correctly on Facebook, chair yoga, and more. Saturday's sessions are 10 am-8:30 pm. The fun continues for members Sunday morning from 10-12 with an open weaving session to practice skills learned the day before.
Sunday's SeatWeaving Roadshow is FREE and open to all ages from 12-4pm in the Folk Art Center's Auditorium. Attendees will enjoy demonstrations by guild members showcasing the various methods and materials used in chair caning and seat weaving. Visitors are encouraged to step up to a chair and practice weaving themselves. Educational displays and special exhibits will be on site.
The SeatWeavers’ Guild is a nonprofit educational group organized to promote and perpetuate the age-old craft of chair seat weaving. Members are craftsmen, teachers, and restoration artists with a deep desire to pass on the seat weaving trade. Previous host locations of the annual gathering include Robbins Crossing Historical Village in Ohio, Sturbridge Village of Massachusetts, Brown County State Park in Indiana, and Old World Village in Wisconsin.
